Made from industrial naphthalene and concentrated sulfuric acid via sulfonation, condensation and neutralization, it is one of the first industrially mass-produced high-efficiency water reducers. Before modern polycarboxylate-based water reducers became popular, it dominated China's engineering market, and is still used in cost-sensitive projects with non-extreme performance requirements.
